India welcomes US’ tag on IM

Aday after US slapped sanctions on Indian Mujahideen (IM) by tagging it as Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO), India on Friday welcomed the move saying it reflected a shared commitment between the two countries to combat the menace.

“The US designation reflects our shared commitment to the strong and growing bilateral counter-terrorism cooperation as well which is an important component of the India-US strategic partnership,” MEA spokesperson Vishnu Prakash said.

The US’ decision has vindicated India’s stand as this designation also recognises that IM has links with Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Tayyeba (LeT), a terrorist outfit New Delhi blames for the Mumbai attacks. The US has held IM responsible for dozens of bomb attacks throughout India since 2005 including playing a facilitative role in the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack.

US said, “IM maintains close ties to other US-designated terrorist entities including Pakistan-based Lashkar e-Tayyeba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JEM) and Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HuJI).”

Daniel Benjamin, the Department of State’s Coordinator for Counterterrorism, had on Thursday said, “These designations highlight the threat posed by IM not only to Western interests, but to India, a close US partner. The Indian populace has borne the brunt of IM’s wanton violence and today’s actions illustrate our solidarity with the Indian Government.”
