    J’khand stunned, 2 hurt

The walls of the official residence of the Speaker of Jharkhand Legislative Assembly, CP Singh, bore cracks within seconds of an earthquake that was not only felt in the Capital but across the State.

Low intensity tremors hit Jharkhand about 6 pm when the city was busy shopping for the festive season. The Meteorological Department of Ranchi claims that the quake was measured 4 on the Richter scale.

The duration of the temblor was five-six seconds. People came out of their houses in a panic. Two persons jumped off the roofs of their houses. They were admitted in Guru Nanak Hospital for treatment. Residents said that window panes, dishes, doors and furniture started shaking when the quake hit. Some of the residents of the city are still under shock and have been calling up their friends and relatives ever since.

The earthquake was largely felt in Ranchi, Dhanbad, Pakur and Santhal Pargana. The last earthquake registered in Jharkhand was on August 11, 2009, about 1:30 am. Nitish Priyadarshi, a geologist and lecturer in a college, said, “The reason behind the tremors in Ranchi may be a quake the epicentre of which is located elsewhere. Though Jharkhand comes under the stable zone, the impact of the quake was high.”
