Goa to install wireless trackers on ore-laden trucks

In a bid to check rampant illegal mining in the State, the Goa Government is contemplating radio frequency identification (RFI) devices on ore-ferrying trucks.

Chief Minister Digambar Kamat said on Monday, “We have been very active to curb the illegal trade. I had written to then Union Minister for Environment and Forests (MoEF) Jairam Ramesh for a moratorium on new mining leases.”

The move comes in the wake of a stringent probe by Justice MB Shah Commission appointed into illegal mining rampant in the State with varying estimates placing the figures from 1,200 crore to 10,000 crore.

“RFI is a unique system in which radio waves are used to transfer data from a truck tagged with the device to a control room. The consignment can be tagged during ore movement on truck till the time it is loaded on ships for export,” Kamat said.

Shah and other members of his Commission have been camping in Goa for the last three days visiting controversial mining leases, interviewing bureaucrats and inspecting documents related to extraction and export of iron ore from the more than 100 operational iron ore mines in Goa.

His visits have sent chills down the spines of many Goa’s politicians, who tried to influence him to keep the mining going while others were busy trying to destroy evidence.
