In a big sense of relief, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday told the the Ministry of Earth Sciences that there did not appear to signs of more aftershocks and landslides.
"Since Sunday, five aftershocks have occurred and their magnitude was less than the quake. Scientifically, this indicates that it's very unlikely that there would be more aftershocks," an IMD scientist RS Dattatrayam told The Pioneer.
An earthquake of magnitude 6.8 shook the northeastern India on 18 September at 18:11 hours IST. The quake had epicenter in Sikkim-Nepal Border region and rattled Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya and West Bengal. Tremors were also felt in Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan and Delhi and NCR.
IMD said the tremor was a result of interaction between Indo-Eurasian plates.
However, aftershocks kept rattling the hilly states even on Monday, resulting in landslides cutting off major roads. Following this, secretary in the Ministry of Earth Sciences Shailesh Nayak held a meeting with the IMD officials on Monday evening to take stock of the situation.
Since the quake, five aftershocks occurred at 18:42 (magnitude: 5.3), 19:24 (M:4.6), 20:35 (M:3.0) hours on Sunday and 00:57 (M:3.4) and 03:21 (M:3.8) hours on Monday.
The "moderate" quake triggered widespread landslides and road blockages making rescue and relief work difficult in Sikkim. Sikkim's main highway NH 31-A was damaged at several places, cutting-off the state from the rest of the country.
This left National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team stranded in Bagdogra.
