Kerala hartal over fuel price almost total

The State-wide dawn-to-dusk shutdown on Monday called by the CPI(M)-led LDF and BJP to protest against last week’s Rs 3-a-litre petrol price hike was almost total in Kerala with shops and commercial establishments remaining closed throughout the day and vehicular traffic coming to a standstill.

The hartal, combined with a State-wide strike by motor vehicle workers, threw normal life out of gear across the State. Educational institutions had a holiday on Monday while Government offices were rendered unable to function as attendance of employees was thin. The hartal also hit most industrial units in the State.

The shutdown was near total in the northern, central and southern regions. In capital district, Thiruvananthapuram which witnessed a second hartal in three days, no public vehicles were seen on the roads. The district had seen a hartal on Saturday called by the DYI to protest against police action on its activists.

Incidents of small-scale violence were reported from many places. In the southern region, a vehicle carrying a marriage party came under stone-pelting, the police said. In Kollam, hartal activists pelted stones on a bus of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation.

A KSRTC bus came under stone-pelting at Ambalappuzha in Alappuzha district while the police’s efforts to block a group of activists from attacking a post office in Kothamangalam in Ernakulam district led to some tension. Stone-pelting at a bus was reported from Palarivattam, Kochi during a road-block by hartal activists.
