Latest Indian News : Telangana stir: Protesters to sit on tracks from today

While the indefinite strike in support of Telangana completed 11 days on Friday, things were going from bad to worse for the commuters, as all the modes of transport came to a grinding halt.

On the political front too, the situation has become hot for the elected representatives who had not resigned in support of Telangana so far. At many places, MLAs belonging to the Telugu Desam Party were attacked by the Telangana agitators, who demanded their immediate resignation.

While 10,000 buses of the Road Transport Corporation have been off the road for the last four days in Hyderabad and other nine districts of the region, the Telangana Joint Action Committee has now called for 'Rail Roko' on Saturday and Sunday, making life even more difficult for the commuters.

Adding to the woes of the common man in Hyderabad, more than two lakh autorickshaws also will go off the road for two days in support of the indefinite strike. Similarly, the autorickshaws in other Telangana districts will also stay off the road for 48 hours. Telangana Auto Drivers Joint Action Committee president Roop Singh said that five lakh auto drivers throughout the region will be participating in the strike. They will also organise different protest programmes including burning of anti-Telangana political leaders' effigies and take out a procession in Hyderabad on Sunday.

In view of the Rail Roko call and massive mobilisation of Telangana supporters to occupy the rail tracks everywhere, the South Central Railway has cancelled 55 express and 88 passenger trains either running within the region or passing through the region. Similarly 55 trains were diverted and 49 express trains and 19 passenger trains were partially cancelled.

The rail link between the different parts of the country was likely to be hit badly as no long distance train will be able to pass through the Telangana region. In Adilabad district, bordering Maharashtra, the leaders of Telangana Joint Action Committee and Telangana Rashtra Samiti went from door to door, canvassing support for the Rail Roko and urged the people to come out in large numbers and sit on the tracks from Saturday. Adilabad is a key station through which many north-bound trains pass.

With this, the ongoing agitation for division of Andhra Pradesh into two and formation of Telangana State has entered into a new and more intense phase. The Telangana Railway Employees Joint Action Committee organised a massive protest at Rail Nilayam in Hyderabad which was addressed by the Telangana Rashtra Samiti leader K Taraka Rama Rao. JAC leaders alleged that the Telangana region was badly neglected during the last 50 years and most parts of the region were still underdeveloped in terms of railway lines and other facilities.

However, the JAC made it clear that while taking part in all other protest programmes its members will not be involved in stopping the trains. The State Secretariat continued to echo with the protest demonstration of the striking employees. They formed a human chain in the Secretariat forcing the Chief Minister to enter his office from the back gate.
