Latest News from India - Congress against removing Chief Whip PC George: Ramesh

Kozhikode : The Congress, heading the multi-party United Democratic Front (UDF) Government in Kerala, today said it was not in favour of removing Chief Whip P C George following withdrawal of the Vigilance Court Judge from the sensational Palmolein Import Case.

Talking to newspersons here, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee President Ramesh Chennithala said ''there is no need to remove P C George'' from the post following withdrawal of Vigilance Judge P K Haneefa from two-decade old case.On Justice Haneefa's decision earlier in the day requesting the Kerala High Court to recuse him from the case, he said ''the action of a Judge cannot be questioned.'' Commenting on Mr George requesting President Pratibha Patil to take action against the judge in the case linking Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, he said ''that was his personal decision.'' He said since the party has not made any comments on the Judge ordering a re-probe, it should not be drawn into the controversy.

Refuting CPI (M) State Secretary Pinarayi Vijayan's charge that the government was stagnant as it failed to take appropriate steps to contain many deaths due to fever in the state, he said the government was performing well.

Mr Vijayan was in dilemma as his party-led Left Democratic Front lost power in the last Assembly Poll, he alleged.
