Heads have begun rolling post-Gopalgarh police firing. On Friday, additional chief secretary, Home, PK Dev, was removed from his post. Krishan Kunal and Hinglaj Dan, district collector and SP respectively of Bharatpur at the time of incident, have been put under suspension.
Soon after the incident, in which 10 people were killed on September 14, both were removed from there and were waiting for posting orders.
Before leaving for Delhi late on Thursday evening, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot had a prolonged meeting with Home Minister Shanti Dhariwal in which it was decided to remove Dev from the post. Dev had reportedly opposed the suspension of Kunal and Dan as he felt they had done their best to deal with the situation. He refused to sign the suspension orders and threatened to proceed on three months leave. Dev had on Thursday stayed away from several important meetings, which he was supposed to chair, according to sources.
Sources said that Gehlot sent Dhariwal to pacify Dev. Later, it was decided to shift him as additional chief secretary (Housing and Urban Development). Sources also informed that both Kunal and Dan were planning to challenge their suspension.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot met Congress president Sonia Gandhi here and reportedly explained the situation in the State following riots in Bharatpur. The meeting is significant as the party leadership, which had sent an AICC team to Bharatpur, is reportedly unhappy with the State Government’s handling of the riots in which 10 people were killed. The Bhanwari Devi kidnapping case is another major embarrassment for the CM as name of a Minister is figuring in the entire controversy.
The party reportedly wants the Chief Minister to improve the State administration as the Government’s image has been adversely impacted by the recent events. The restructuring of the PCC executive committee was also discussed. However, sources ruled out a change in the leadership or major Cabinet reshuffle in the State.
