Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa on Friday got a reprieve when the Madras High Court quashed proceedings against her in the2 crore ‘birthday gifts’ case.
According to the CBI chargesheet Jayalalithaa allegedly accepted 89 demand drafts worth2 crore from 57 people, drawn from various banks in her name, on her birthday in 1992. Many of the names of the 57 persons were found to be fictitious and many had denied purchasing the drafts.
Jayalalithaa had moved the MHC seeking to quash the entire proceedings on the grounds that the CBI had taken 14 years to file the chargesheet.
