The ruling BJP continues its victory march in Karnataka, winning the Koppal by-election. Sanganna Karadi’s victory by over 12,000 votes over his nearest rival, Congressman Basavaraj Hitnal, is seen as a vindication of the strong support the party enjoys despite recent internal wrangling.
Chief Minister DV Sadananda Gowda said the people of Koppal had supported the BJP because of the Government’s development initiatives and collective leadership. He said his Government was committed to develop the constituency.
According to JD(S) leader YSV Datta, the BJP candidate’s personal charisma, his contacts with the voters, his work and the influence he wields there, as well as local issues, had given an upper hand to the BJP. He added that the victory was not that of the BJP as a party, but that of the individual.
Congress president G Parameshwar accused the BJP of distributing money to voters. He expressed unhappiness at the failure of the Election Commission to prevent this.
