Govt stops VHP meet in Govindgarh

Tension was building up again at Gopalgarh in Bharatpur and adjoining areas on Thursday, as the district administration of Alwar did not allow the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) to hold its Samrasta Sammelan at Govindgarh, close to Gopalgarh. Ten people were killed in police firing at Gopalgarh a fortnight ago.

Gopalgarh, Pahadi Nagar and a few other small towns in Bharatpur on Thursday experienced bandh to protest denial of permission to the VHP to hold the meet, which was aimed at bringing two communities close to each other.

Reports coming from the area said there was tension in Gopalgarh and other towns as groups of people from a particular community were seen in the streets persuading the traders to close their shops.

The district administration of Alwar had promulgated prohibitory orders around Govindgarh and did not permit the VHP to hold its meeting.

Over 200 VHP activists led by Gyandev Ahuja, a BJP member of the Assembly, courted arrest.

Despite prohibitory orders, a large number of people had reached the venue as Praveen Togadia, VHP general secretary, was supposed to address the sammelan. The district administration had deployed a large number of police personnel to avert any untoward incident. The Collector and the Superintendent of Police of the district were camping at the venue to keep a watch on the situation, according to official sources.

At Jaipur, senior police officials and officials of the state Home Department remained busy throughout the day to monitor the situation.
