Four cops hurt in attack by villagers

At least four policemen were injured, two of them seriously, when a police party on Wednesday was attacked at Kaprda village in Jodhpur, where it had gone in search of Baldev alias Balia, one of the absconding accused in the kidnapping case of nurse Bhanwari Devi, in which Water Resource Minister Mahipal Maderna is also one of the accused.

According to official sources, based on a tip-off, when a police party comprising half-a-dozen unarmed police personnel reached the village and began searching houses to trace Baldev, villagers surrounded them and attacked them with sticks and other blunt weapons. The policemen had to retreat hastily to save themselves from this unexpected and sudden attack. Sources said that two constables suffered fractures in the process.

The Rajasthan High Court had on Monday reprimanded the police for its tardy investigation in the case. Umesh Mishra, IG of Jodhpur Range, who was present in the court, was asked to submit the progress report by October 11.

After that, several police parties were sent to various parts of the State as also to other States to arrest the three absconding accused, Shahabuddin, Sahi Ram and Baldev.

According to official sources, the police is focusing on the arrest of Sahi Ram, considered close to Maderna, and believes he played a key role in the disappearance of the 37-year-old nurse. Meanwhile, the police is set to question Maderna who has been named in an FIR filed in connection with the case. He attended office after a nearly three weeks on Tuesday, but refused to comment on the episode.
