Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot’s meeting with Congress party president Sonia Gandhi on Friday in Delhi, in the backdrop of the Gopalgarh police firing and the kidnapping of nurse Bhanwari Devi, has triggered speculations in the party, ranging from a change in leadership to Cabinet reshuffle and political appointments.
Congress leaders, who had started a campaign against Gehlot after these two incidents, say that Sonia was not happy with the working of the Gehlot Government and was contemplating a change in the leadership. Though the party high command has not given any indication about a change, Gehlot adversaries are hopeful that a change in the leadership would happen sooner than later.
They had stepped up their campaign soon after the visit of the AICC team to Gopalgarh and its adverse reports on Gehlot’s governance. On the other hand, supporters of Gehlot maintain that, though the party chief was not happy with the recent happenings in Rajasthan, she was not keen on any change in the leadership at this stage.
They also said that, during the meeting Gehlot got the green signal for a reshuffle-cum-expansion of his nearly three year-old Government. Gandhi had also cleared the list of political appointments.
Sources said that Gehlot wanted to drop the Ministers facing charges of corruption, which had dented his Government’s image in recent times.
According to party sources, the constitution of the executive of the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee was also discussed. The visit of PCC president Chandrabhan to Delhi on Saturday and his meeting with Union Social Justice Minister, Mukul Wasnik, who is in charge of Rajasthan in his capacity as AICC general secretary, is being considered very significant as it discussed the name of those who could be made office-bearers of the State party.
