Ahead of veteran LK Advani’s nationwide anti-corruption yatra — which will kick off on October 11 from Sitabdiara in Bihar — the BJP leadership on Friday spelt out the do’s and don’ts for the party cadre.
The cadre have been asked to speak in one voice during the 38-day long event “since any distraction could take the fizz out of the campaign for clean politics”. The party also advised its managers not to be bogged down by media criticism, if there is any, and concentrate on setting its agenda of “good governance”.
Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley said, “The campaign of Anna Hazare and Baba Ramdev did prove that people of this country were setting the political agenda. It was beyond imagination to think that 50,000 people could gather within hours of a call (during agitation by Hazare and Ramdev).”
Jaitley told BJP's campaign managers here that during Advani's yatra there should be complete discipline and leaders should not air personal views that were not in sync with the party's line of action.
"What the local leaders say is also important. Anybody should not be allowed to speak (from a public platform) without knowing what he will say," he said at a workshop for media managers of the party.
Jaitley told party workers to realize that journalists have their own limitations and they would always look for distraction that could make news for them. But, he added, party workers should have a single-minded focus on bringing "good governance and clean politics".
He lashed out at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and asked him to ask himself why his government is called the most corrupt in Indian history. "When you are in office, you should know how to keep some people away from yourself. See, how the Abdullah duo (Farooq and Omar) are paying for allowing dubious people to take total control of them," Jaitley added.
The BJP leader accused the Government of scuttling Parliamentary procedures and processes as has been seen in the case of its treatment of the CAG reports, in the functioning of the PAC, or in the cash-for-vote scam. Jaitley insisted that this had become a "habit" with the UPA government.
"PAC has become an inconvenient instrument," he said, citing the case of Goa PAC indicting Chief Minister Digambar Kamat. BJP also alleged that the conclusions reached by Delhi police in the cash-for-vote scam did not appear to be credible. The party is miffed at the arrest of its two whistleblower MPs and Advani's former close aide Sudheendra Kulkarni.
