Latest News from India - Still no verdict on Sanjiv Bhatt bail

Arrested DIG Sanjiv Bhatt’s efforts to be out on bail got deferred on Friday as arguments on the matter in the Sessions Court remained inconclusive.

Opposing Bhatt’s bail application before the Sessions Judge VK Vyas, Government advocate SV Raju said the IPS officer may influence key witnesses of the case.

Bhatt, who had earlier this year alleged that Chief Minister Narendra Modi had asked the state police to ‘allow Hindus to vent their anger’ during the 2002 post-Godhra riots, was arrested last week for threatening his junior constable Karansinh Panth and forcing him to fabricate affidavit implicating Modi.

Arguing in favour of the bail plea, Bhatt’s lawyer Iqbal H Sayed told the Sessions Court judge that the IPS officer is unlikely to jump bail as he is a serving government officer and also he cannot tamper with any document as they are already in public domain.

The arguments remained inconclusive and the proceedings have been adjourned till Monday.
