Driven beyond despair by the behaviour of her constable husband, a woman poisoned her five minor children before committing suicide in Banda on Thursday night. In the suicide note later found on the scene, she also held her husband responsible for the deaths.
As per reports, Vimla Devi (38) of Musanagar hamlet of Attara police circle was very upset with her husband Manoj Kumar, who is a police constable posted in Allahabad as he neither provided for her nor her five children — Manish (15), Pooja (13), Aarti (11), Rinki (9) and Ravi (7).
Finally, on Thursday night, the distraught woman served food laced with poison to her five children. After confirming that they were dead, the woman later wrote a suicide note before consuming the poison herself.
In the suicide note recovered from the spot, Vimla Devi alleged that Manoj gave her no money to look after the family and was somehow making ends meet by working as a Shiksha Mitra. It has also been alleged that Manoj used to come home in a drunken state and brutally assault any one who opposed his conduct. She said that unable to overcome the perpetual trauma, she decided to take the extreme step.
In the note, the victim also maintained that she and her entire family fasted all nine days of Navratra and performed puja and hawan. Vimla Devi explained that she chose the Vijayadashmi day as she wanted to be immersed along with her children in the river like the idols of Goddess Durga and other deities.
The sensational incident came to light on Friday morning when neighbours noticed Vimla and her children had not come out of their house till late in the afternoon. Their suspicion grew when they found that the door was locked from inside. When they failed to elicit a response from within the house, they called the police. A team of cops reached the site and broke open the main door only to find six dead bodies.
SP Banda, RK Srivastava when contacted, confirmed that the police would initiate legal proceedings against the erring husband. He said that a case was registered in the matter and the bodies had been sent for post-mortem examination.
