Latest News from India - HC flays destruction of public property during strikes

Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Tuesday directed to deposit an amount equal to or in excess of the value of public property destroyed during strikes along with the amount for bail. If those who are alleged to have destroyed properties were finally absolved of the charges, it would be refunded. The HC also observed that destruction of public property by strikers and agitators should be viewed seriously. In its order, the court observed that public property was destroyed very often during strikes by political parties. Every citizen has a right over such property. It should not be destroyed. The court could not remain a mute spectator when public properties are destroyed. The court made the order while granting bail to five students who had ransacked the Vocational Higher Secondary School, Chathamangalam in Kozhikode, during a strike in August 2011.The court also asked the students to deposit Rs.50,000 each as value of the property destroyed. The court ordered to release them on bail by executing a bond of Rs.25,000 in the Kunnamangalam Judicial First Class Magistrate Court.
