    Seat-sharing: RLD, Cong parleys on

The Congress and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) are on the verge of finalising an agreement for Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls with leaders of both parties locked in a hard bargain over sharing seats.

“Talks are going on between the two parties. We are moving ahead and something will come out soon,” a senior Congress leader said on condition of anonymity.

AICC in-charge of the State, Digvijay Singh has been in talks with RLD supremo Ajit Singh and many rounds of negotiations have already been held.

The Congress is reportedly ready to give 40 to 50 seats to the RLD but the latter is demanding for more apart from pressing for a ministerial berth at the Centre for the RLD chief who has a substantial support base among the Jat community in the Western parts of the State.

The Central Screening Committee for UP met on Friday to discuss the candidates names for the remaining constituencies where a detailed discussion was held on names of prospective candidates.

The ongoing talks between the two parties is also reason for the Congress not declaring candidates for most of the seats in the Western Uttar Pradesh in the first two lists of 73 and 62 party nominees that it has released.

Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi is making efforts to revive the party’s fortune in the Hindi heartland by improving the party’s position in the State. His friendship with Ajit Singh’s son and RLD MP Jayant Chowdhary is also playing a crucial role in the two parties forging for an alliance.

Since the performance of Congress in 2007 Assembly polls was dismal, it realises that support of an alliance partner will help it improve the tally in the State.
