Latest News from India - Price of rice on increasing mode, though sales decline

Mattancherry: The sales of rice is facing sharp decline in the public market. Reports say that sales declined by 50 % in the public market. It is pointed out that the demand in public market is declining due to supply of rice for less price through ration shops and other PDS system by the government. But at the same time though the demand is less, the price for rice is not declining.Rice belongs to surekha and jaya are widely being used in the state. The price for the rice in wholesale market is Rs 23 to 24.5 per kg. In retail market the price is Rs 27 to 28.

Wholesale dealers said that the reason for no decline in price as the central government gave permission to export rice.
The mill owners in Andhra are more interested in exporting the rice. While exporting rice they will get money soon and the exporting companies will bear the cost of the packing too. The power crisis in relation to Telangana issue also affecting the rice production in Andhra. Now the mills are only working for 3 to 4 hours a day. 90 % of good quality rice for Kerala are coming from Andhra. The decline in supply is also sighted as reason for increase in price. Kerala Merchants association president Venkateshwara said 50 % of rice produced are being exported in Andhra, which are of high quality. So the quality of price being supplied to Kerala would be less.

Though the government is supplying large quantity via PDS system, the increasing price is creating tinge headache for the government. There are also allegations that rice being distributed for Rs one or two per kg through PDS are someway or other reaching the public market too. Ration shops owner by giving money to the consumer, are buying back the rice and will in turn sell it in the public market and the government is not able to curb the same.
