    Khurshid sticks to ‘tycoon’ stand

Notwithstanding the Supreme Court’s disapproval and Opposition’s criticism, Law Minister Salman Khurshid on Tuesday stuck to his earlier stand that hounding out corporate honchos (in the 2G scam) will affect the investment climate in the country. The Law Minister is also against bringing the corporate sector under the ambit of the Lokpal or RTI as it would make legislations unwieldy.

Pointing out that locking up top executives affects their entire establishment, he said that proper care should be taken in such issues. “The Supreme Court should not take over the Government’s role.”

Interacting with the members of Indian Women's Press Corps, the law minister stressed the need for a proper debate to arrive at a correct position on such legal issues, as along with taxes, business atmosphere and land acquisition, they decide the investment climate.

However, the law minister denied that by making such statements he was trying to influence or direct the Supreme Court which is hearing the bail applications of five corporate honchos in the 2G spectrum scam.

"The court these days are very tough, they do not get affected (by these statements)," he said when asked whether as law minister he was giving an indirect hint to the Supreme Court.

There was no conflict between the government and the judiciary and both could discuss these issues logically by reaching out to each other through holding regular consultations, he said.

Reiterating the Congress line that Anna Hazare was not responsible for the party's debacle in recent by-polls, Khurshid said that it would not have any such impact in Uttar Pradesh where Team Anna is planning an anti-Congress campaign.

"When campaigning in Hisar has broken Team Anna with two of its members already dissociating and then if it goes ahead with campaigning in Uttar Pradesh it will completely disintegrate."

About the Congress and the Government speaking in different voices with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh writing a conciliatory letter to Hazare while Congress leader Digvijay Singh writing three letters to the Gandhian accusing him of taking support of RSS and being "led the garden path" by the BJP on the false promise of making candidate for Presidential polls, he said since Team Anna has no formal structure and changes like "amoeba" based on issues, the government and the Congress needs to respond to them at various levels.

‘CAUGHT UNAWARE BY TEAM ANNA BLITZKRIEG’

Admitting that the UPA Government has faced “difficult time during the past one year,” the Law Minister also conceded that the Government was “caught unaware of some changes” happening in the society as Team Anna used traditional politics with unconventional modern practices like social media — Twitter, Facebook and SMS to spread their message. But the government had no such flexibility unlike Team Anna which used social media very effectively.
