PM, PC can’t pass buck: BJP

Following the framing of charges against A Raja and Kanimozhi, the BJP has now trained its guns against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Home Minister P Chidambaram saying they cannot escape responsibility for the scam.

BJP president Nitin Gadkari said that the Prime Minister cannot “escape” responsibility in the 2G spectrum scam for which only the alliance partners should not be blamed. He maintained that the Prime Minister has a lot of questions to answer, as holding only Raja responsible won’t do.

The problems for the UPA Government and the Congress are likely to continue as the Supreme Court is expected to deliver its judgment, after Diwali vacation, on Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy’s petition charging Home Minister P Chidambaram (then Finance Minister) of colluding with Raja in the 2G scam.

BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman demanded a CBI probe to ascertain the role of Chidambaram and insisted that he should either step down or be sacked to facilitate a fair investigation under the supervision of the Supreme Court.

Since the CBI has already registered a case against another former Union Minister Dayanidhi Maran, his fate is also hanging in the balance compounding the problem for the beleaguered DMK and causing worry for the UPA Government which depends on the crucial support of 18 DMK MPs for its survival.

For his part, DMK supremo M Karunanidhi on Saturday, who met Kanimozhi in Tihar Jail, tried to mend fences with the Centre and its UPA ally by meeting the PM and Congress president Sonia Gandhi in an apparent bid to press for his daughter’s early release on bail. He had a meeting with Law Minister Salman Khurshid on Friday.

Karunanidhi, who had avoided meeting the PM and Sonia during his earlier visits to the Capital to express his annoyance over continued incarceration of his daughter, went to 10, Janpath along with his wife and Kanimozhi’s mother Rajathi Ammal in the morning. He met the PM in the evening.

DMK leader TR Baalu was present during the half-hour long meeting with Sonia during which Kanimozhi’s issue also reportedly came up. After meeting Sonia, Karunanidhi dropped Rajathi at the court, where charges were framed against Kanimozhi.

The Dravidian party has asserted that it will fully back Raja and Kanimozhi and take all possible legal recourse to help them come out on bail for which the hearing starts from October 24.

The Congress said that no political motive should be read in Karunanidhi’s meeting with Sonia as she is heading the UPA coalition of which DMK is a partner.

Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said that the BJP has the habit of seeing “conspiracy or political motive” in everything, and condemned it for attacking the PM and the Home Minister and trying to make political gains out of the ongoing legal processes.

Though admitting that framing of charges under Section 409 was serious matter, he said these are just charges and nothing has been proved.

Moreover, now the possibility of Kanimozhi, who has a small child, getting bail has brightened as under law there is a special provision for bail for women, he said.
