Former world cup and English Premier League star Terry Phelan paid a visit to the State capital in the weekend. The main aim of his one-day visit was to obtain first hand information about local football in Dehradun. Terry, a former Chelsea and Ireland’s world cup football team member, is the biggest ever football star to visit this part of the nation.
Nicknamed ‘the scuttler,’ Phelan is a former footballer who played as a left-back for a number of clubs, including Chelsea, Leeds United, Swansea City, Wimbledon, Manchester City, Everton and Fulham. He also made 42 appearances for the Ireland national team, whom he represented at the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
Phelan is chief mentor of the Goa based SESA Football Academy. As a part of his Doon visit, Phelan visited the Maharana Pratap Sports College where he witnessed a friendly match between Sunderwala Boys and Wills Youth Club.
Interacting with the Sports College students he shared his childhood memories. “I grew up playing football on the streets of Manchester and had no formal training in football. I don’t have a great height either, in spite of which I made it to the big league. You need to have the proper attitude to excel”, he stressed. . On watching the indoor rink at sports college, he suggested that it is a perfect location to host Futsal (indoor five a side football).
Phelan’s tour was organised by reputed football management company Libero Sports.
Few months back the company managing director Sukhwinder Singh accompanied by manager (Player Representation) Randeep Baruah had visited Doon and found the city very promising. The visit has evoked enthusiasm among the football fraternity in Doon.
Dehradun Football Association secretary Devendra Bisht said, “It is a great feeling that people from outside Uttarakhand are showing interest in Dehradun football. We are thrilled with the response.”
