Gujarat cow slaughter ban comes into force today

The Gujarat government on Sunday announced that the recently amended anti-cow slaughter law will come into force on Monday. The day marks the beginning of Diwali festivities.

An official statement described it as a way to respect ‘go-dhan’ on a day when Gujaratis buy precious metals.

The Gujarat Animal Preservation (Amendment) Bill 2011 was passed in the Assembly’s monsoon session prohibits killing of cows, their transportation and selling or purchasing of beef.

It also covers people transporting cows for slaughter, with a maximum punishment of upto seven years in jail and a fine of up to Rs 50,000. Their vehicles will also be seized.
