Bomb on route fails to deter Advani’s Yatra
Powerful explosive planted under culvert on outskirts of Madurai
Senior BJP leader LK Advani escaped a possible bomb attack, as the police recovered a powerful pipe bomb, laden with 10 kg of explosives under a culvert on the outskirts of Madurai district early on Friday morning. Advani was scheduled to take the route for his ongoing Jan Chetna Yatra.
An unfazed Advani decided to continue with his yatra and unleashed a no-holds-barred assault on the UPA over terrorism, clemency and corruption. The bomb scare, however, prompted organisers to change the route of yatra to avert any incident.
Police said about 10 kg of gelatine powder had been packed in two PVC pipes, bound together and linked to four detonators and 12 volts battery, with a 50 metre wire. The bomb was to be operated manually. The bomb was detected by a resident of Alampatti, M Selvaraj, who had gone to the river bed to answer the call of nature.
Madurai IG P Kannappan is leading the investigation and ADGP (Law & Order) P George is also at the spot to investigate. The police have detained a person named Nehru in this connection.
Placing of such an explosive device on the convoy route of VIP in this region had never happened before. Police are suspecting the role of Naxalites, who are active in neighbouring region. The area has also been witness to escalated tension between two communities in recent past.
The bomb scare brought security set-up on its tows, but Advani decided to continue with his yatra. Before resuming the second leg of his journey, the leader and his daughter Pratibha Advani visited the Meenakshi Temple and offered prayers to Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar.
As Advani’s yatra through the southern districts of Madurai, Virudhunagar and Tirunelveli passed through the sensitive regions of Sivagiri, Vasudevanallur, Kadayanallur, Tenkasi and Sengottai before reaching the Kerala border, heavy security and a huge posse of police monitored the route.
In Tamil Nadu, Advani cautioned political parties against meddling with court decisions on clemency. The issue has evoked strong emotion in TN after the state assembly passed a resolution seeking clemency for killers of Rajiv Gandhi.
“Whether it is Rajiv Gandhi killers or the attackers of Indian Parliament, whatever decision has been taken by the court should not be meddled with on political grounds,” he said in Madurai.
On J&K CM Minister Omar Abdullah’s demand for removal of AFSPA, Advani said, “We feel the approach to terrorism should be consistent. It should not be hesitant and wavering from time to time.” He also asked the Government to review its nuclear policy suggested that cases of nuclear plants on the sea shore must be reviewed thoroughly.
Advani tried to strike a chord with Tamil Nadu population in asking New Delhi to firmly ask Colombo to put an end to attack on Indian fishermen and seek rehabilitation and restoration of the democratic rights of Tamil refugees in Sri Lanka.
He also sought immediate release of former aide Sudheendra Kulkarni and other ex-BJP MPs, who have been arrested in the cash-for-vote scandal despite acting like a ‘whistle blower’.
Advani said Congress leaders should not go scot-free and their role must also be probed in different scams because that would not have been possible without the role of leaders from Congress.
Asked if he was supporting the DMK, Advani replied, “The DMK has been an ally of the Congress. I have no sympathy for the DMK. But they cannot indulge in corruption unless there is permission from the Congress. Why there is no investigation done on the Congress?”
Later, addressing the public on route to Kerala, Advani continued to stress on the black money stashed away in Swiss banks and the need to get them back so that poor villagers could live without economic trouble.
