Tribal-dominated Bahalisahi, Kansa and other villages under Sukinda block in Jajpur district face water scarcity in October . People of this block face a lot of problems due to this scarcity and are furious about the coming months.
The tube wells present in these areas are in breakdown conditions and neither the Gram Panchayat (GP) nor the Block Development Office (BDO) has any plan to fight water scarcity in the areas.
“Due to non function of many tube wells, the villagers have been using the contaminated water from the ponds, rivers and other water sources. The scarcity will be multiplied by many times in the coming months. Many tribal persons including women and children have to walk miles in search of water,” said Amar Tirki of Kansa.
A search for water is daily routine for women and children of the tribal-dominated villages. Women and children dig a dry riverbed in search of water. The scenes of people walking in long lines with vessels on their heads are common.
In many villages, one feels to be in the medieval period as locals drink the polluted waters from the ponds, ditches and other water bodies. Tribal women still have to walk for miles in the sun to fetch drinking water for their daily requirements.
Children are made to stand in serpentine queues right from the morning to fetch water due to heavy rush near the tube-wells. Many also drink polluted waters after collecting it from ponds, ditches and other water bodies.
“We have recently repaired many tube wells and other defunct tube wells will be repaired soon. Wherever there is scarcity, we will definitely provide water, either by tankers or by any means,” said BDO Manoj Behera of Sukninda Block.
