Avian guests make wintry arrival at Bhitarkanika

The wintry avian guests have started arriving at the Bhitarkanika National Park this year for nesting and breeding.

With the onset of winter every year, migratory birds flock to the Bhitarkanika National park and stay till the summer approaches.

Some shore bird species like the sand piper, plover, ducks, geese, heron, cormorants and spoonbills have started thronging the branches of mangrove trees in the dense parts of the national park, said Rajnagar Mangrove Forest (wildlife ) DFO Manoj Kumar Mohapatra on Friday.

Every year during October-end and the first week of November, various types of migratory as well as residential bird species throng the park for nesting and breeding as it provides a congenial atmosphere for the birds to peacefully and comfortably settle down for the purpose.

An estimated 45,610, including the migratory feathered guests and the residential species, of 107 types of water birds, were sighted by the Bhitarkanika National Park authorities in the annual bird status survey for 2010 which was carried out in the water bodies of the park and its nearby areas on December 22 and 23 last year, said Mohapatra.

Birds fly thousands of miles to reach Bhitarakanika to escape the harsh winter in Siberia, Afghanistan, Iraq, northern Asia and some central European countries. They generally stay in Bhitarakanika for about four months before setting out on their homeward journey.
