Ganjam district officials, including local tehsildar and District Deputy Director of Agriculture, visited Tikarapada village under Balipada Panchayat of Kukudakhandi block on Friday to conduct on-the-spot inquiry into the suicide death of a farmer, Dibakar Sethi (45), on Thursday.
The suicide death coincided with Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s visit to Ganjam district. The village also falls within the Assembly constituency of Revenue Minister Surjya Narayan Patro.
Deep agony due to complete crop loss in the current drought reportedly drove Sethi to commit suicide by consuming pesticide as he was totally depressed over his helplessness to clear debt. Sethi died at the MKCG Medical College hospital when he was under treatment.
Reports said Dibakar had incurred a loan `1 lakh at the time of his daughter’s marriage. He had faced huge crop loss during last year’s untimely rain. Unfortunately enough, he had not also received the compensation despite tall talks by the Revenue
Minister. With this year’s crop loss, Sethi apparently lost his mental balance and consumed pesticide.
Revenue Minister Surjya Narayana Patro and Sanakhemundi MLA Ramesh Jena have ‘helped’ `5,000 and `10,000 respectively to the family of the deceased, it is learnt.
