Almost all Ministers from Telangana region ended their boycott of official duties as they attended the State Cabinet on Saturday evening. The meeting was held at the Secretariat after a gap of four months.
Panchayat Raj Minister K Jana Reddy the only absentee Minister from Telangana region as he was in New Delhi.
Though the Cabinet once met two and a half months ago, the meeting was held at the camp office of Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy as Telangana Ministers were unwilling to come to the Secretariat.
Attendance of Telangana Ministers indicated a change in the atmosphere since Government employees ended their strike and resumed their duties. It is also being seen as a major success for the Chief Minister, who was trying to persuade Ministers to return to work as the Congress high command was working to find a solution to the Telangana problem.
The Ministers from Telangana region were staying away from their offices since they tendered their resignation from the Assembly in July. Though the Speaker had rejected their resignations, most of the Ministers were not attending office, fearing backlash from the people.
Saturday's Cabinet meet was called to discuss several important issues, including phase II of the rachabanda (village junction) programme starting from November 2 and several new welfare initiatives, including Rs 1-per-kg rice scheme for below poverty line families.
Meanwhile Congress MPs from Telangana region gave a call to all Ministers and elected representatives to boycott official celebrations of Andhra Pradesh Formation Day on November 1. The MPs met at the residence of Rajya Sabha member K Keshav Rao in Hyderabad on Saturday and urged all Telangana leaders to maintain unity and foil conspiracies to create division in their ranks.
Rao said Formation Day celebrations were an affront to the people of Telangana region fighting for a separate State.
He also rejected allegations of Telugu Desam president N Chandrababu Naidu and other party leaders against Telangana Rashtra Samiti president K Chandrashekhar Rao, that he had bartered the Telangana agitation for the sake of the Polavaram project tender. "This is a baseless allegation aimed at damaging the Telangana movement," he said.
Meanwhile, the TRS rejected the decision of the Congress Core Committee to have further discussions with the partners of UPA on Telangana issue. The decision was taken at the core committee meeting on Friday attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and AICC president Sonia Gandhi.
