In a jolt to the Central Government’s plans to operationalise AIIMS-like institutes in different States by the year-end, three of the six newly appointed directors of the institutes have refused to join the new posting.
This means, the functioning of the regional AIIMS at Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur and Raipur will delay further as the Government will have to once again go for the entire process of selection for the three top posts.
Sources told The Pioneer that Dr SK Sharma, Head of Department of Medicine, has refused to take charge as director of the AIIMS, Jodhpur while Prof SK Acharya, Head of the Gastroentrology Department has expressed his reluctance to join AIIMS, Bhubaneshwar. Similarly, Prof Kameshwar Prasad who heads the Neurology Department in the AIIMS does not wish to move to Raipur to take charge of the regional institute there.
The sources said that Prof Reeta Sood (Medicine) from Delhi-based AIIMS after initial reluctance is now likely to join AIIMS, Rishikesh by November 8.
With three professors playing spoilsport to his plans, an annoyed Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad held a meeting recently with them to discuss the issue. He lashed them for their refusal to be part of the AIIMS-like institutions at the last-minute which, he said, would delay the Ministry’s plans to start the colleges by the year-end.
Azad also refused to buy to their theory that they would have no work as the institutes were yet to start and that Delhi AIIMS was facing severe shortage of staff.
Refusing to buy to their theory, he reminded them if they were not interested for the post they should not have applied for the post. Moreover, they should not have accepted the offer letter. Asking them to head to their respective institutes, Azad warned them that he would not consider appointing any AIIMS faculty in future for higher posts if they refused to do so.
However, GK Singh and Sandeep Kumar — surgeons working at the century-old King George’s Medical College (now Chattrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University) have said that they will join the new postings at the new AIIMS at Patna and Bhopal respectively by November 8.
Dr Singh said that his priority would be to instill confidence among locals. “The regional AIIMS are being set up in various States to make tertiary medical care available to common people in different parts of the country. They do not have to come to big cities for treatment."
The civil construction works for the six new institutions is going on in a full swing and medical colleges is expected to operate by the end of 2011 while hospitals by October 2012.
