Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh has once again put his party and the UPA Government in an embarrassing situation by making a strong pitch for release on bail of all accused who have been charge-sheeted after completion of probe.
Digvijay has on Friday cited the example of former Goldman Sachs Director Rajat Gupta getting bail in a US court in support of his argument.
Though Digvijay has not named anyone, it is being seen as an indirect support for release of former Congress Secretary Suresh Kalmadi, former telecom minister A Raja, DMK MP Kanimozhi and other accused in scams involving Commonwealth Games and 2G spectrum.
"Good to know Rajat Gupta got bail. Would our Judiciary also take a cue and not keep under trials in lock up once they are charge sheeted," Digivijay has said on micro-blogging site Twitter.
The Congress General Secretary, who in the past also had supported release of Kalmadi on bail as chargesheet has already been filed against him, said that he prayed to the God that the former Congress Secretary could prove himself innocent.
Uncomfortable with Digvijay's comment, the Congress and the Government have distanced themselves from it while the BJP has attacked the Congress General Secretary of trying to derail the judicial process.
Law Minister Salman Khurshid pointed out that Digvijay is a senior leader of the Congress, but not a part of the government. "The government has to be very careful about the position it takes," he pointed out.
Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi's first reaction was, "I do not see any reason to comment on every comment of others." But when it was pointed out that "other" is the general secretary of his party, Singhvi said that it was personal opinion of Digvijay. He said the Congress has no view on legal or judicial merits of any case.
The BJP taunted Singh in saying that the man who referred Osama as "Laden Ji" was favouring bail to undertrials as Congress leaders and ministers were facing allegations of corruption and have landed in jail.
BJP spokesman Rajiv Pratap Rudy said, "I think it (Digvijay's remark) is an attempt to draw the attention away from the real culprits who are involved in all these scams whether related to 2G scam or the Commonwealth games."
He said that some people who faced corruption allegation included Congress ministers at the Centre. "Congress is trying to escape blame by shifting all the blame on its allies," Rudy said, adding, "Digvijay's remark was a deliberate attempt by individual leaders in the Congress to make the real culprit get away easily. The real culprits are at large, which the nation is also witnessing."
