Crib deaths continue, toll hits 17 at BC Roy

There was no respite from crib deaths in Bengal with more children succumbing to their ailments at Burdwan Medical College and Hospital, and four more dying at the BC Roy Children’s (Referral) Hospital, State Health Department sources said.

At least 12 children died at BMCH between Wednesday and Thursday, Hospital Deputy Superintendent Tapas Ghosh conceded. While seven infants died from Encephalitis the other deaths were reported on account of low weight he said.

The BC Roy deaths continued not to be due to negligence of the medical staff, State Health Directorate claimed quoting in-house sources. Director of Health Sushanta Banerjee said a committee was instantly formed to probe the reasons behind the BMCH deaths and reports would be submitted before Chief Minister who also handled the Health portfolio.

“There are infrastructure problems and we are trying to take care of that and it would take some time before things fall in place” Banerjee said before giving out the details of the deaths which he said “prima facie do not appear to have happened due to negligence.” A committee had been formed to probe the matter and “two senior officials from Kolkata had rushed to the spot, he said.

Back in Kolkata, crib deaths continued to stalk BC Roy Hospital with four more children perishing on Friday, sources said insisting the medical staff were not to be blamed as the children who died were “critical and underweight.”

Friday’s deaths add the total number of victims to 17 with 13 infants perishing during previous 48 hours. A summary probe conducted by two senior doctors and a nurse of the same staff had given clean chit to the medical staff.

BC Roy had earned notoriety for reported child-deaths when 20 children had died in a single day a few years ago. However, the state of affairs refused to look up even as 18 crib deaths were reported in a single day in June this year leading the Chief Minister to set up a probe committee. The report on the June deaths would be submitted to the Health Department. BC Roy is the largest referral hospital in eastern India.

Referring to the BMCH deaths Ghosh said the hospital was already bursting at its seams adding it was forced to take in 107 patients against a sanctioned strength of 60.
