BJP wants full time Health Minister in West Bengal

The BJP has strongly criticised the Bengal Government’s ad hocism in handling the healthcare system that allegedly led to large-scale mismanagement and recent crib deaths. Even as the State on Monday started a “sick newborn care unit” at the BC Roy Children’s (referral) Hospital which saw at least 18 infant deaths in a span of 48 hours late last week.

In a circuitous reference to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who handles the health portfolio, BJP leader Smriti Irani said it was time, the Government gave its stop-gap arrangements in giving health service to the people.

“Health is a full time job and cannot be handled in combination with other Ministries,” Irani, who was accompanied by senior Bengal party leader Tathagata Roy said, adding that “a full time Health Minister is the requirement today.”

Coming down heavily on the Government who “failed to provide even scanning or echo machines”, she wondered how “the Government gave a clean chit to the hospital authorities for so many deaths occurring in a matter of few hours.”

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Health Sudip Bandopadhyay on Monday cleared the State Government on child deaths even as he inaugurated a sick newborn care unit at the BC Roy Hospital. “The Chief Minister is concerned about the deaths and the Government is trying to take every possible measure to better the health facilities,” he said.
