Khurshid hints at 6 pc reservation for Muslims

With an eye on the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, the Congress-led UPA-II Government is likely to grant reservations to Muslims.

Union Law Minister Salman Khurshid has hinted that Muslims will be provided six per cent reservation in the Central Government services. It will be on the basis of quota-within-quota and within the stipulated 27% reservations for OBCs.

Khurshid was in the city to attend the award presentation ceremony of Unity College on Monday. The college is run by All-India Muslim Personal Law Board, vice-president Kalbe Sadiq.

Khurshid candidly admitted that the decision was taken with an eye on the coming Assembly elections. “Don’t you expect us to make offers before elections?” he asked.

According to the Union Law Minister, the reservations will be for socially and educationally backward class Muslims in Central services within the OBC category.

“The finer details of the reservation model are being worked out by the Minority Affairs Ministry and Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry,” he added.

Khurshid said the Muslims would be provided around six per cent quota as per the recommendations of Sachar Committee and Ranganath Mishra Commission. He said the minorities comprised of 8.4 per cent of the OBC population, and they would be provided this much quota within 27 per cent OBC reservation, with six per cent being reserved for the Muslims.

The Union Law Minister said the Government may adopt a model similar to the one in force in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka within next three months.
