In yet another incident of a senior citizen being murdered in cold blood, an octogenarian woman was smothered to death in her Jangpura residence in South East Delhi. The murder was discovered by her neighbours who in turn informed the police.
Identified as Vimal Shah (82), she was left to fend for herself as her son Bharat Ratan Shah and daughter-in-law Lipika had left for Singapore on October 17 last to meet their sons. Her servant, Jagat, a Nepali citizen who worked and lived in the house is missing since Sunday night.
Police suspect that it was Jagat who killed Vimal Shah first and then went on to ransack the house. It was not immediately clear what was missing from her house, but the police found an almirah open and other articles were turned upside down. Police said the way the house was ransacked, it indicates the involvement of another person in the crime.
Vimal Shah stayed with her son and daughter-in-law in her house no K-7, Jangpura. Neighbours told the police that she had shifted to this house some 25 years ago. Her husband had passed away 33 years ago. Vimal’s son Bharat Ratan Shah, owns a hardware factory in Delhi. Her grandsons Kunal and Pranay work in Singapore.
A senior police official said a call was received at 11:40 am on Monday that an elderly woman was found murdered at her residence in Jangpura. When police reached the spot, she was found lying dead in the house and her hands were tied. It appears that she smothered to death. There were no external injury marks on the body. Vimal Shah was a chronic asthma patient and that made her vulnerable as the killer choked her to death.
The assailant had used keys to open the locks in the house and the motive behind the murder appears to be robbery. The domestic help, Jagat (20), a Nepali, has been missing ever since the incident took place. Jagat was employed by the family a month ago after the previous servant left the job.
Additional Commissioner of Police Southeast district Ajay Choudhary said, “Police are investigating the case from the angle of murder with an intention of robbery. Two pillows were found near the woman’s body, which makes it clear that she must have been asphyxiated. There is also a possibility that Jagat was accompanied by his associates.”
Vimal Shah’s nephew Mohit, who lends a hand in his family business, said, “I used to call up taiji daily after bhaiya left for Singapore. Today morning, bhabhi called her up from Singapore; when she did not attend the call, she called up her neighbours to know if everything was fine with her. Neighbours went to her house and knocked the door. When taiji did not answer, they called up her maid, to help them. On opening the door, they found taiji lying in the bathroom. Later, we gave a call to the local police.”
Vimal’s maid, who had been working in the house for the past 10 years, said, “Her neighbours called me to the house after there was no response from the house. The door was locked from inside. We broke open the door to get inside. I have working in their house as a cook for the past 10 years.”
