‘Unfortunately, PM not last word on issues’
Keeping up his attack on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, BJP leader LK Advani on Friday night said corruption and inflation were growing as the Prime Minister did not have the last word.
Advani took his attack on the PM further by saying that “from the start, things have moved in such a way that the buck does not stop at 7, Race Course Road. It stops only when 10, Janpath endorses what Race Course Road proposes. Things do not move ahead till 10 Janpath endorses.”
The BJP leader said, “This situation is not good. It is harmful for the nation.”
Justifying his criticism, Advani said, “If I have criticised the Prime Minister, the main reason is that in democracy, the Prime Minister’s has to be the last word. If any board is put before him, like that before the US President, it should read ‘the buck stops here’...That there is nothing beyond it.”
The BJP leader said since the PM did not have the last word, inflation continued to rise due to “rampant corruption” and he was unable to control it. “The best economist will not be able to manage inflation if corruption continues at this level,” he added.
Advani said he had a different view of Manmohan Singh before he became the Prime Minister. “During his (Manmohan Singh’s) tenure as the Finance Minister, there was an important change in the country’s economic policy. I don’t know if it can be termed as late Prime Minister Narsimha Rao’s or Manmohan Singh’s achievement,” he added.
The BJP leader said he had seen leaders from Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru to Manmohan Singh “but never before were Central Cabinet Ministers arrested on the charge of corruption and sent to jail”.
He urged the people to work together to eradicate corruption completely and bring back black money stashed away in foreign banks. “In Switzerland alone, `25 lakh crore are deposited in the bank there. I suggest the money be invested in development of villages in our country,” said the BJP veteran.
Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray and RPI leader Ramdas Athavale were also present at Advani’s rally. Advani described Athavale as the latest member of the NDA. “The two leaders have given me strength by their presence,” he said.
Uddhav accused the Prime Minister of being “invisible” when the country was facing the onslaught of price rise and when it was angry over growing corruption. “So far, 2.5 lakh farmers have committed suicide in different parts of the country,” he said.
Praising the leadership of Advani, Uddhav said, unlike Manmohan Singh, the BJP leader’s life has been an open book and he has always worked among the masses. “Singh has remained a bureaucrat,” he alleged.
