Revolt against UPA’s midnight massacre, BJP exhorts people

Revolt against UPA’s midnight massacre, BJP exhorts people
Senior BJP leader and former Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha on Friday exposed the UPA Government’s argument about higher international prices leading to higher domestic rates and claimed the average international crude price hovered around just $80 per barrel in the last five years.

The UPA regime pushed upwards the prices of petroleum products at least 24 times after it came to power in 2004. These were justified in the name of high international prices of crude.

“In July 2008, the internal price of crude oil reached $146 per barrel, it highest ever. But the average price between 2006 and 2011 was around $80 per barrel. The Government does not bring down prices while international prices come down,” Sinha told the media here on Friday.

BJP was also not convinced with the Government argument that petrol prices have been decontrolled. “Why was a GoM formed when the Government has no role?” Sinha asked. He further insisted that it was wrong to link the frequent hikes to devaluation of the Rupee versus the Dollar. “The price of Rupee versus the Dollar will keep going up and down as it is traded everyday. When Dollar falls will you give relief?” Sinha asked UPA.

He pointed out that petrol prices were lower in all key neighbouring country. A litre of petrol costs `41.81 in Pakistan, `50.30 in Sri Lanka, `44.80 in Bangladesh and `42.82 in the United States.

Sinha described as “midnight massacre” the last night decision to hike petrol price by Rs 1.82 per litre and directly blamed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi for the decision, which could not have been possible without their consent.

“The time has come when the people will overthrow this corrupt and arrogant Government... I am asking the people of India to revolt against it and show it the door,” he said, asking people to stop paying taxes.

Sinha attempted to fish in troubled waters by asking UPA allies to immediately withdraw support to the Government. “Else they would also be equally responsible for the sin of the Congress headed government,” Sinha said.

Referring to the famous lines by Rammanohar Lohia — zinda kaumein panch saal tak intezar nahi karteen (a lively nation does not wait for five years) — Sinha also asked the Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and Lalu Prasad, who are inspired by Lohia, to pull out. These two regional parties provide outside support to the Manmohan Singh Government.
