Bolt from the blue for kith & kin
The mood in the courtroom swayed from expectancy to despair when a city court rejected the bail pleas of eight accused, including DMK MP Kanimozhi. Sadness and dismay prevailed in the courtroom as relatives of the accused burst into tears.
Earlier, a visibly calm and composed Kanimozhi was seen consoling other accused and relatives but soon she too broke down and also could not help yelling at the mediapersons inside the courtroom.
Kanimozhi was heard saying to others, “Do not worry. We will try again.” Her husband G Aravindan expressed anger at the dismissal of the bail plea and was heard remarking, “This is not fair. Why did he reject the bail?” Kanimozhi tried to pacify her husband saying, “Why are you getting so excited? Do not worry.”
Referring to the court’s order, Kanimozhi told her husband that the judge wanted to send a strong message to white collar criminals. Kanimozhi at one point lost her temper when she noticed scribes jotting down the conversation between herself and her husband. Yelling at the mediapersons, she said, “Are you all not human beings? This is a personal discussion. Why are you people standing here?” Following this, around 20 DMK supporters and the defence counsels asked the court staff to request the media to vacate the court. A little later, Kanimozhi was seen sobbing and hugging her mother Rajathi Anmal. Her supporters, dressed in complete white, surrounded her and family in an expression of solidarity.
Apart from her husband, son and mother, DMK leaders TR Baalu, TKS Elangovan, Durai Murugan, Vasanthi Stalin, Helen Davidson, KB Ramalingam, Jaya Durai, Tiruchi Shiva, South Indian stars Khushboo and Ritesh too gathered inside the courtroom. South Indian actress Khushboo, who had directly come from the airport, to support Kanimozhi, after the court proceedings said, "I was here to support Kanimozhi. I am in a state of shock. She is a strong woman but it hurts when you see a mother and her son breaking in court. It is a denial of justice."
The relatives of other accused Shahid Balwa, Asif Balwa and Filmaker Karim Morani were also seen shedding tears. "What is this? When even CBI was not opposing the bail plea then why the judge denied them bail," said a relative of Bollywood producer Karim Morani, denied bail even on health grounds. This was the fourth time that Kanimozhi was refused bail. She has been in jail since May 20 for allegedly helping fellow DMK leader and former communications minister A Raja accept Rs 200 crore in kickbacks. According to sources, Kanimozhi is again considering of moving a bail application in the Delhi High Court.
Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy, who is pursuing the 2G case, welcomed the judgement saying it is wise to keep the high-profile accused in jail till the recording of statements by witnesses. "These are not ordinary people. These are billionaires who have international connections. Consequently, when witnesses are called, these witnesses could be affected by atmosphere created by their coming out, celebrations for them, holding rallies etc. In that situation, it is a wise thing to keep them in till witness deposition is over."
