President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam may be leaving office for a life more ordinary on Wednesday, but he has made a permanent place in the history books. Not just as an addition to the list of Presidents of India, but as arguably India?s most-loved first citizen. One who endeared himself to the masses, his sheer accessibility setting him apart from his predecessors. He will go down in the pages of history as having been India's first technocrat Prez who struck the perfect balance between political and Presidential life in the hallowed halls of Rashtrapati Bhawan. Being the country's Supreme Commander in times of coalition (he was at the helm of affairs for two successive coalition governments) hasn?t exactly been a cakewalk for this scientist. However, he ensured that he did not allow petty political squabbles and internal bickering to get the better of him.
His popularity has cut across sections of society -- the intelligentsia, the academia and more importantly, Gen-Y, the future of tomorrow. And no public leader in the Indian scenario has been able to garner such fame and instant recall in recent times. Buoyed by his rational thinking and scientific approach to problems, Kalam came to represent the middle class Indian hero, armed with personal integrity and diligence. As Dr Kalam packs his bags and gets ready to move into a one-bedroom guesthouse, here?s wishing him all the best and hoping that he continues to ignite minds, young and old, alike.
So hats off our dearest Ex-President...you'll be in our hearts for ever....
