Crime branch now probing Pune double murder case

Following failure of the Pune police in nabbing the prime suspect and solving the brutal murder case in which a Delhi-based woman lawyer was set ablaze along with her fiancé at their apartment allegedly by a woman software engineer on October 13, the case has now been transferred to the Pune crime branch.

Addressing the media about the development, Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rajesh Bhansode said the crime branch had taken over the investigations two days ago.

It may be recalled that Bangalore-based IT professional Anushree Kundra (30) had set ablaze her ex-lover Nimesh Sinha and his fiancée Juhi Prasad, a Delhi-based lawyer, at their flat in Viman Nagar in the wee hours of October 13. According to the investigation agencies, it was a love triangle that led to the horrific incident. Anushree, who originally hailed from Delhi was in a relationship with Patna-based Nimesh. They were both software professionals and were staying together in Gurgaon and later in Pune for the past four years. However, Nimesh’s parents were opposed to their relationship and got him engaged with Juhi, a relative of BJP leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy who worked as a legal advisor in a MNC in Delhi.

While Juhi Prasad, who had received 98 per cent burns in the incident, succumbed at a private hospital on October 22, her fiancé Nimesh Sinha sustained 10 per cent burns. Anushree - a software engineer employed with an IT firm in Bangalore - is untraceable since then. The Wanowrie police, who were earlier investigating the case, had launched search operations for Anushree at Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi. Her phone is switched off since the incident and the email account also suspended.

According to the police, after looking into the entire incident it seems that Anushree had pre-planned the entire act while setting ablaze her ex-boyfriend and his fiancée. The police had seized an empty petrol bottle and a match box from the scene of the crime.

“All that we know about Anushree is that she is a divorcee with a 12-year-old son who lives with her ex-husband in Bangalore. After committing the crime she had headed to Matunga in Mumbai and withdrawn a large sum of money from an ATM. Since then she is untraceable,” said Bhansode.

Bhansode also said that they would be looking into the allegations made by Juhi’s father NA Prasad where he has raised his apprehensions related to the involvement of Nimesh in the case. In his statement to the police, Prasad has asked the investigating authorities to interrogate Nimesh. He has challenged the police version that Nimesh had called Anushree and his daughter to his rented flat in the city to settle the issue. Prasad had alleged that it could have been Sinha who set Juhi on fire and was passing the blame on to Kundra, thus getting both women out of his way.
