Madras HC stay on sacking of workers

Madras HC stay on sacking of workers

The Madras High Court on Friday granted interim stay against the Tamil Nadu Government order terminating over 12,000 Makkal Nala Pniyalargal (staff of the public welfare schemes) and posted the hearing in the case to November 21.

Granting the interim stay Justice K Suguna issued notice to the Government and also asked two associations heading the workers to furnish the names of the workers sacked by Saturday to the court registrar.

Advocate Chandra Mohan who appeared for the workers pointed out that the contract of the workers is renewed every two years and under the last renewal, their work contract is till May 2012 and therefore, they cannot be sacked without prior notice.

The prosecution argued that since the workers were on contract no prior notice was necessary to terminate their services.
