Now, complaint against Karuna’s other daughter

Now, complaint against Karuna’s other daughter

In another setback to the family of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, a software company promoter has lodged a complaint with Chennai Police Commissioner alleging that he was cheated by people claiming to be close to Karunanidhi’s family. Karunanidhi’s elder daughter, MK Selvi, figures in the complaint.

Sanjeev Kumar Dwivedi of Jharkhand, settled in Chennai for 15 years, in his complaint said that he was cheated to the extent that he lost his flourishing business of `8 crore.

As promoter of Ubiquui Softwares located in Villivakkam SIDCO in the western suburbs of Chennai, Dwivedi was approached by Ramco Systems vice president Chetan Pathak and TVS Net Technologies COO Samson Manuel for a business deal with Ice Telecom Pvt Ltd in mid 2009.

He was taken by the two to meet Ice Telecom CEO Shyam at Ranjith Road in Kotturpuram. Dwivedi said in his complaint he was informed that the building belonged to Karunanidhi’s daughter Selvi Selvam (married to Murasoli Maran’s brother Selvam) and they said that she “was also the actual owner of Ice Telecom”.

At the meeting he was presented a deal. Dwivedi alleged that TVS-ICS, a joint venture of TVS Group and Ice Telecom, had been awarded a tender worth `3,250 crore for the construction of 3G and 4G cellular towers and networking for the South Zone consisting of four southern states and Chennai Circle. They claimed that they also have control over the contract for the whole country worth `40,000 crore. These contracts, they claimed, had been awarded by A Raja, who was the then telecom minister, he alleged

Dwivedi added that he was told that though they held the contract, they did not have the know-how and solicited his help to use his international contacts to source large infrastructure players, who could execute the work.

He alleged that they wanted to sell the contract licences controlled by them for `4,000 crore and he was promised 1.5 per cent (commission), which works out to `60 crore, Dwivedi claimed in his complaint.

Keeping his own business at bay he concentrated on sourcing the right persons to handle the contract. Experts came to Chennai on his invitation and were booked into five-star hotels as his guest, while they negotiated with Shyam and others.

Dwivedi alleged that substantial money was exchanged, but he was never compensated.

When the 2G scandal broke out, Dwivedi alleged, Selvi, Shyam and all others disappeared and he was left with the unpaid bills. Dwivedi also alleged that he was threatened by Shyam that if he revealed anything about the deal, his whole family would be “finished off”. He alleged that he was not allowed to meet Selvi and Raja in turn, through an intermediary, asked him to settle the issue with Selvi.

A source in the Police Commissioner’s office confirmed to The Pioneer that the complaint was lodged on November 11 and investigations were on.

Already, Selvi’s nephew and former Union Minister Dayanidhi Maran is under CBI scanner for his alleged involvement in the 2G scam. Maran allegedly delayed issuing of 2G licence to Aircel and manipulated change in ownership. Maran is also alleged to have established a whole new telephone exchange from his home and linking it to his brother Kalanidhi Maran’s business house Sun TV Network.

Selvi’s half sister and Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi is indicted in the 2G spectrum scam and languishing in Tihar jail. Her bail plea still hangs fire in the Delhi High Court.
