Kalam turns teacher for Bihar legislators

Kalam turns teacher for Bihar legislators

Former President APJ Abdul Kalam on Tuesday donned the role of a teacher for Bihar legislators, asking questions on the politics of development in their area. Kalam also suggested an eight-point formula for better development.

The ex-President reached Patna on Monday evening to address legislators, including Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, in a programme focused on Bihar's development. He also addressed some school students and suggested a success mantra for life.

“It must be a matter of pride for you all having spent years as legislators but your role as representatives will be proved only when your efforts satisfy those who have sent you to the House to serve them,” said Kalam, addressing members of both Houses of the Bihar legislature.

Kalam also asked the legislators to practice “political politics as well as politics of development instead of electoral politics. There is an urgent need to practice the politics of trust also. Satisfy others to satisfy yourself”.

Kalam, however, refused to be visitor of the Nalanda International University but assured that he would be associated with the university in the capacity of a teacher. Kumar had earlier requested Kalam to accept the post.

The former President had reportedly resigned from the post of the visitor after a controversy had risen over the appointment of Vice-Chancellor Gopa Sabharwal. There had been much hue and cry over the Reader of a Delhi University college being appointed as Vice-Chancellor of the university at an astronomical salary.

Earlier, Kalam had sent a questionnaire to the legislators on how they could develop their constituencies. Some legislators also put forth questions to Kalam which he explained in detail.

“These days, voters don't trust their leaders and only by meeting targets and deadlines can representatives can win their trust,” said Kalam.

The former President further focused on two core areas. “There is a huge potential in agriculture as there is vast tract of arable land but farmers are not getting fair prices. When they get fair prices, there will be more agricultural produce which can change the face of the State,” he suggested.

In tourism too, the Government can make a religious circuit. “One crore people may visit Bihar every year. If tourism is being properly looked after here…the Government should explore and use existing potentialities in this sphere,” Kalam said.

Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, Assembly Speaker Uday Narayan Choudhury and Council chairman Tarakant Jha were also present.

Before leaving, Kalam addressed students of two schools and gave them some tips.
