Shutdown total in Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu responded with a near total strike on Thursday. A token day-long fast was also held by traders, highlighting concerns that their business would be wiped out if rich foreign players are allowed to compete.
Most shops in Chennai, Coimbatore, Tiruchy, Madurai and other big towns down shutters. The hotel industry chose to remain open, but some smaller restaurants shut down. Schools, colleges and offices remained open but all vegetable vendors in stalls, carts and neighbourhood provision shops stayed away.
Many localities faced scarcity of milk as some joined the protest call given by the Tamil Nadu Traders Associations’ Federation. Federation chief T Vellayan expressed concern to the media to FDI in retail.
