Naxals blow up railway tracks, set trucks ablaze

CPI (Maoist) rebels on late Saturday night blew up rail tracks in Latehar, Gumla and Bokaro and burnt trucks and dumpers in Gomia and Pakur on the first day of its 48-hour Bharat Bandh called against the killing of Maoist leader Koteswar Rao aka Kishanji.

Maoists blew up the track between Burwadih and Chhipadohar by triggering a landmine that left a 5-foot deep crater and damaged a 12-foot-long section late at night in Latehar.

Tracks between Gomia and Dania stations too were damaged by landmines, and disrupting rail traffic for at least 12 hours. “The explosion that took place at around 2 AM damaged railway tracks and interlocking panel of the track disrupting rail traffic for hours,” said Sudhir Kumar, DRM Dhanbad. Maoists left pamphlet at the incident site declaring the 48-hour bandh in the State in protest of the killing of the Maoist leader Kishanji.

“We called the bandh to protest the fake encounter of Kishanji by the police,” Maoist spokesperson Samarji told over telephone from an undisclosed location.

In a similar incident, between Gumla and Dumrivihar, railway tracks were blown by landmines at two places near Bazartaand railway pole number 52/10 damaging the railway track up to the stretch of 8 metres at Gomoh- Barkakana route of CIC section.

In a separate incident, Maoists set a coal-laden truck on fire at Gomia-Vishnugadh road, near Sardari village in Bokaro, about 5 km from Bermo. The driver and the cleaner were asked to leave the truck after which the truck was set on fire. The extremists fired indiscriminately at vehicles on National Highway 33 near Sardari village.

In Pakur also, the extremists put three coal-laden dumpers on fire. At around 12.30 PM, about 30 to 35 Maoists first fired from their SLR guns and then set the three dumpers on fire one by one. Posters were also left near the site claiming the encounter of Kishanji as fake.

In Gadhwa, the markets of Bargadh, Ramkanda, Kharaundhi, Dandai and Kharyandhi block remained closed while the long route buses preferred to remain off the road. In Lohardaga also, the bandh completely paralysed the transportation of Bauxite resulting in an estimated loss of `1 crore. Markets remained open as normal.
