Slapgate: Thackeray lampoons Anna for targeting Pawar
Castigating Anna Hazare for his justification of his “Just one slap” remark about Sharad Pawar, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray on Friday wondered as to why the “Mahatma” of Ralegan-Siddhi had chosen to “target” the Maratha leader, even while “protecting” his own allegedly “corrupt” team members.

In his fierce criticism of Hazare’s double-speak, Thackeray said: “Anna accuses of Pawar having an old habit of protecting corrupt people. What about Anna himself, how can he explain the fact that he himself is protecting his team members who are facing allegations of corruption and financial misconduct? It is not just that Hazare is also protecting a lawyer Prashant Bhushan who has taken anti-Indian stand on Kashmir issue.”

Maintaining that by merely wearing a Gandhi cap, did not make a Hazare a Gandhian, Thackeray came down heavily on Hazare for his flip-flops on Pawar: “First Hazare supported the Pawar slapping incident, then regretted and then again justified his “Just one slap?” initial reaction, it is sheer madness on the part of Hazare to chosen to justify the attack on Pawar, on his blog.”

“The manner in which he has chosen to justify his comment on the slapping of Pawar reflects as if Hazare is celebrating the event,” the Sena chief said, in an editorial published the Sena mouth-piece Saamna. “Hazare has a cap on his head, but there is no Gandhi in it. He has justified violence and indulged in provocation… It is high time that Hazare understood Gandhiji’s philosophy …He should read Gandhiji and experience him, he never used violence in words, thoughts or deeds...,” he said. Going by the manner in which anti-corruption crusader had “targeted” Pawar, it gave one an impression that in Maharashtra and the rest of the country, “Mahatma” Hazare had found Pawar to be only “corrupt” leader and all others were as clean as washed rice, he said.
