Sex scandal: Cops quiz Kerala Minister

Sex scandal: Cops quiz Kerala Minister
The Kerala Police’s special investigation team probing the 15-year-old infamous ice cream parlour sex scandal, in which Industries Minister PK Kunhalikutty was allegedly involved, questioned him the other day. The questioning at his official residence in Thiruvananthapuram lasted five hours.

The SIT, headed by Additional DGP Vincent M Paul carried out their job after serving notice on him as per the provisions of Section 160 of the CrPC after several postponements. The police had been trying to question the Minister for the past one month.

The questioning was on the basis of the “disclosure” by businessman KA Rauf that Kunhalikutty, de facto supremo of the Muslim League, had avoided being named as accused in the infamous sex scandal by bribing and threatening the victims and witnesses and earning favourable court verdicts by bribing two former High Court judges.

Reports indicated that Kunhalikutty had denied the allegations leveled by Rauf, also his close relative, in the first round of questioning on the basis of a questionnaire. It was said that Kunhalikutty told the officials that he had not engaged anyone to sabotage the case. However, officials refused to speak about the response of the Minister to the detailed questioning.

Superintendents of Police Anup John Kuruvila and P Vijayan and Deputy SPs Jaison K Abraham and Venugopal, members of the SIT, also took part in the questioning. The SIT’s questioning was on the basis of the statements given by 89 persons including Rauf, who was a close aide of Kunhalikutty when he was Minister in the former UDF Government.

With this, questioning of all the people connected with the case had been completed, sources said. The High Court had asked the SIT to file its final probe report before December 22. The former LDF Government had constituted the SIT to re-investigate the ice cream parlour sex scandal after Rauf leveled serious allegations against Kunhalikutty in January last.

The infamous case pertains to the sexual abuse of certain minor girls trapped in a sex racket based at an ice cream parlour in Kozhikode. Kunhalikutty had resigned as Industries Minister in 2004 after victim Rejina openly alleged through the media that he had abused her several times in 1996 when she was a minor.
