Maoists strike twice in Jamui
Maoists abducted seven labourers in the wee hours of Friday from two bridge construction sites in Jamui district. The police have launched a massive combing operation to trace them.
According to other labourers, whom the Maoists released after a few kilometres, over 50 heavily-armed guerrillas raided a construction site at Pakari village under Khaira Police Station. They took the labourers into the deep forest on the Bihar-Jharkhand border.
Maoists first struck at a site where a bridge over Kiul river is being constructed and kidnapped four, identified as Chandan Yadav, Pradip Yadav, Phultus Yadav and Vijay Singh.
“Then they moved to another place, where a water tank of the State public health and engineering department was being built, and kidnapped three more labourers,” said one of them. Later, they were identified as Dharmendra Yadav, Yogendra Yadav and Anil Singh. Two of the seven labourers abducted are reportedly from Uttar Pradesh.
Eyewitnesses pointed out that the Maoists had kidnapped 14 labourers from both the sites but after a while, released seven while taking the remaining seven into Garhi forest areas.
The police reached the spot later in the morning to nab the fleeing Maoists. “We’ve launched an operation against the Naxals who apparently have abducted the labourers. Along with the Central Reserve Police Force and Special Task Force personnel the district police are engaged in the operation”, said Jamui police chief Pushkar Anand.
The police suspected that the Maoists might have kidnapped the labourers for levy. “The construction companies might have failed to pay levy or protection money to Maoists”, suspected some policemen preferring anonymity.
Earlier on November 1, the Maoists guerrillas had kidnapped altogether 14 labourers in Jamui and released them later. The locals told The Pioneer that the Maoists released them after the construction companies paid levy to them.
Sources said that Rs 30 lakh were paid to Maoists for the release of the labourer abducted n November. However, the police denied it and said that the Maoists released the labourers after police mounted pressure on them.
The adjoining districts of Munger, Jamui and Lakhisarai on the border of Bihar-Jharkhand are considered Maoists stronghold. Out of 38 over 28 districts of Bihar are Maoist affected.
It was in Lakhisarai-Jamui borer the Maoists had earlier abducted five policemen while killing one of them. Later, after a high voltage drama and police-political intervention they reportedly had released them after a week. The incident had shocked not only the State but the nation as well.
Significantly, on Thursday night the Maoists dared to move out with a mashal julus [torchlight procession] in Hajipur, just 25 km from the state capital, Patna in protest of the “alleged encounter” of the their top leader Kishanji.
The Maoist procession was covered by a few local mediapersons but the district police apparently had no clue about it. The naxals covering their face reportedly moved out from the place after shouting slogans.
