Two years on, Telangana still a dream

Two years on, Telangana still a dream
It was exactly on this day two years ago that the Home Minister P Chidambaram announced the start of the process of formation of Telangana State, paving the way for the end of fast unto death by the Telangana Rashtra Samiti president K Chandrashekhar Rao.

Telangana Joint Action Committee, Telangana Rashtra Samiti and other pro-Telangana organisations observed the second anniversary of the announcement as a “Self Respect day”. Protest demonstrations and other programs were organised all over the region.

TJAC convenor Prof Kodanda Ram, who hoisted the Telangana flags at the Martyrs Memorial near State Assembly, described the Congress party as the main enemy of Telangana. “It was because of the conspiracy by the Andhra-Seema businessmen and investors that the Congress failed to fulfil the promise of Telangana”, he said.

TJAC also organised a night vigil at the Indira Park till midnight tonight as Chidambaram had made the announcement late in the night on December 9, 2009.

Osmania University Students JAC also organised hunger strike for a day. Telangana Jagruti convenor K Kavita said that the Congress MLAs from Telangana region could have pressurised the party high command to fulfil the promise but they failed to take advantage of the announcement by Chidambaram.

Telangana Employees Joint Action Committee chairman Swami Goud who led 42 days indefinite strike by the employees said that the employees were ready to plunge in the battle any time. He said that the struggle will continue till the goal was achieved. The Telugu Desam Telangana Forum also organised a dharna at the Martyrs Memorial but it was marred by the verbal duel between the TDP MLAs and the TRS women supporters. The trouble started when the TDP Telangana Forum convenor E Dayakar Rao alleged that the TRS and the TJAC convenor Kodanda Ram Reddy had betrayed the people of Telangana and had entered in to a deal with the Congress.

TRS supporters took objection to it and the police had to intervene and took away the women protestors.

The last two years have been quiet eventful on Telangana front. After the December 9 announcement triggered off protests from the MLAs of Andhra and Rayal Seema regions, the Congress high command tried to put the matter in to cold storage by constituting a three member committee headed by Justice Srikrishna.

The committee submitted its report on December 31 last year making recommendations against the formation of Telangana State.

On the political front, 11 TRS legislators quit the State Assembly to press their demand and were re-elected to the Assembly. But the Telangana MLAs from TDP and Congress failed to keep their word of resigning from Assembly.

An indefinite strike Sakala Janula Samme also paralysed the State and caused huge financial losses. The latest assurance from the Home Minister was that he will soon convene an all party meeting to evolve a consensus on the issue.

The internal trouble of the two parties led to several legislators quitting the parties. Four MLAs from the TDP and two from Congress have resigned and all of them but one have joined the TRS adding to the strength of the party.
