Dhanbad observes bandh after coal baron’s murder

Dhanbad observes bandh after coal baron’s murder
The city of Dhanbad shut down on Thursday after Congress leader and coal baron Suresh Singh was shot down by four unidentified criminals late on Wednesday evening. The funeral procession of Singh was attended by hundreds.

The bandh remained peaceful as people closed their shops and institutions of their own accord. “The bandh was peaceful as there were proper security arrangements. We have been camping in the city since Thursday morning,” Dhanbad Deputy Inspector General of Police, Laxman Prasad Singh, said. Singh was brutally killed by four unidentified criminals at Dhanbad Club on Luby Circular Road, considered to be a highly protected zone in Dhanbad. They pumped four bullets into Singh’s chest. One person has been detained in connection to this case.

Singh, often called as a coal mafia head by the people of Jharia, had gone to a reception party organised by Nunu Singh, owner of a local hotel in Dhanbad. Singh reached the club at 8.15 pm, which is hardly 100 metres from the residence of the Superintendent of Police and 200 km from the Deputy Commissioner’s residence. Singh was killed at 9.15 pm.

He was taken to Central Hospital where doctors declared him dead. Singh has been facing charges for the killing of fellow trader Pramod Singh for the last seven years. “One Pawan Kumar has been detained for investigations. He told us about the incident. He has confessed that he was present at the spot but denied any involvement in the killing,” DIG Singh said.

Amid speculations that the killing was linked to recent income tax raids in the premises of the coal contractor, Lal Babu Singh, which had unearthed more than Rs 100 crore of money unaccounted for, police clarified that the incident is a result of the rivalry between the two families of Singh Mansion and Suresh Singh. It has also triggered widespread tension in the city.

The father of the deceased, TN Singh, has lodged an FIR at Dhanbad police station. Police revealed that they have reached close to the culprit and have enough evidence against the assailant. “We have reached very close to the killer and have enough evidence against him. The culprits will be behind bars very soon,” Singh said.

Three members of Singh Mansion - Ramadhaar Singh, Sanjeev singh and Shashi Singh — have been accused in the case. Shashi Singh is said to be the main accused in the killing of Suresh Singh. The Jharkhand State Congress committee chairman, Dr Shakeel Ahmed, has expressed grief at the killing of Suresh Singh and asked for a high-level investigation into the matter. The politicians of the State are being targeted but the State Government seems to be helpless.

Meanwhile, police have started search operations for the culprits.
