Season’s first shower brings winter chill...
First winter showers on Thursday night have marked the arrival of 'The Delhi Winters'. Friday recoded a two degrees fall in temperature. A steep fall in temperate is expected over the next few days.
The Western Disturbances have moved eastwards towards states of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. The met also predicts dense fog in the days to come. The temperate is likely to fall by four to five degrees over the weekend. 19 flights including 4 international were affected because of poor visibility at the Delhi Airport runway.
While the first week of December had recorded a relatively higher temperature than previous years, a major fall in temperature was recorded on Friday. The met predicts that the fall in temperature is a result of the eastward movement of the Western Disturbances. Friday recoded a minimum temperature of 16 degree Celsius. “For the past few days the winds from south were blowing towards Delhi as a result the temperature remained higher than the normal. However now there is a change in the wind pattern and the Westerlies are blowing over Delhi, which have brought rainfall and a dip in the temperature,” said the Regional Met Officer SC Bhan. The temperate is likely to fall further on Saturday and Sunday. Though met predicts clear sky for the next two days, the minimum temperature is expected to be around 13 degrees on Saturday and 10 degrees on Sunday.
A blanket of moderate fog engulfed the city on Friday. The fog pattern is likely to be the same for the next two days. “The moisture content in the air has gone up because of rainfall. Absence of strong winds has provided favorable conditions for the invisible water droplets to continue remain suspended in the atmosphere. As a result the city will be under the cover of fog,” said Met scientists M Doraiswami.
Fog resulted in the drop of the visibility at the Delhi airport. The visibility at the airport runway was recorded around 200 meters. Airport Met predicts that the visibility at the airport runway is likely to fall further over the weekend. A total of 19 flights were affected in the Delhi airport on Friday. Four international flights were rescheduled. Two domestic flights were cancelled and 13 delayed because of the fog.
...And fog too in city
The fog affected the movement of trains moving to and fro the Delhi railway station. Most of the east bound trains are running several hours behind schedule. 27 trains including Rajdhani Express from Howrah, Sealdah, Bhubaneswar, Patna and Guwahati all ran behind schedule.
Because of the late arrival of the trains, departure timings of 14 trains were reschedule. Last month Railways had announced cancellation of over 20 trains from this month onwards till January anticipating wide-disruption in train services due to fog.
To avoid any mishap on the railway tracks during fog the signalling systems in some sections under Delhi division has been modified to avoid possible collision between trains during poor visibility. Fog-safe device has also been installed in trains in Delhi division to alert loco drivers about approaching signals.
The trains have also been directed to carry adequate stock of food on board so that the passengers face minimum inconvenience in the hours of delay.
